Biographical Information
G. Rick Marshall currently works in the Information Technology Department at University of California, Irvine Medical Center. He helps train the next generation of doctors and nurses in Medical Information Technology and assists the Medical Center in hospital billing and applying information technology to medical research.
Rick and his wife, Janice have owned their home in Torrance since 1990. They have two college-age daughters—Kirsten and Victoria. Kirsten has recently returned from India where she taught orphan girls ballet. Victoria is pursing ballet at Lauridsen Ballet Center and is in the upcoming Peter Pan production as one of the lost boys. The Marshalls regularly host Chinese exchange students through California State University, Dominguez Hills.
From 1984 until 1992, Marshall worked for CCH Computax, the largest tax return preparation company at the time serving CPAs, modifying computer programs to calculate tax returns for both Federal and State income tax returns, including California with special emphasis on corporate and partnership tax returns.
From 1992 until 2012, G. Rick Marshall ran his own computer consulting firm specializing in custom desktop database applications and Microsoft Office customization for small business clients serving such diverse industries as banking, automotive repair, bindery and postal mail preparation, water filtration and distressed real estate.
In 2006, Rick and Janice purchased a coin-operated laundry in Long Beach and there first learned about the sales tax permits issued by the Board of Equalization. He paid quarterly sales taxes on the laundry vending sales as well as filed the annual returns. When the business was sold in 2009, a sizable chunk of the closing costs went to the Board of Equalization.
From 1998-2004 G. Rick Marshall served as a member of the Curriculum Advisory Board for the Office Administration Department at Harbor College advising the department on the key technologies to necessary to train students to be ready for the fast changing information technology revolution.
Rick has raised money for Muscular Dystrophy, mentored young men and women through Junior Achievement and delivered Christmas gifts to children of prisoners through Project Angel Tree. Marshall currently serves as Vice-Chair of the City of Torrance Water Commission ensuring our drinking water is clean, safe and plentiful.
G. Rick Marshall is recognized as a taxpayer advocate and endorsed by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. He is a strong supporter of Proposition 13. If elected Rick will be the taxpayer's voice on the Board of Equalization to ensure taxpayer resources are not wasted, taxpayers are not wrongly taxed and taxpayers get the benefit of the doubt.
Marshall has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sterling College in Business Administration.
